PRIVY SPACE

in the woods and on the road…

backwoods privy

A couple of days ago I was sitting in the privy and the late morning sunlight was coming through the window in a most enchanting manner. Since I happened to have my iPhone in my pocket I decided to take a few pictures from where I sat and before I knew it I found myself in the middle of a photo shoot. (I don’t think I’ve ever done a photo shoot with my pants down.) This time of year the new leaves in the woods are a minty luminous green and the morning light made it even more so. They were shimmering…The decor of the privy is an eclectic smattering of things I’ve collected through the years (each item has its own quirky story) and since this is a place where significant time is spent, I wanted to make it interesting. One of the features is a collage from twenty five years ago, behind glass, that fills a space on the wall in-between the framing studs. You’ll see several shots of the collage included in today’s post. The central piece of the collage is a poster from Paul McCartney’s 1975 “Venus and Mars” album that I found in a garage sale for a buck. I just kept adding images to the poster and building around it until the space was full; cultural icons, local personalities, business cards, advertisements, cigarette packs and even a few dead bugs that crawled behind the glass. For instance, if you look closely at “collage image .3” you will find Linda operating a wood-splitter with a giant one dollar bill on it. Our dogs, Gabe and Sadie, from years ago also make several appearances in the collage. I suppose you could try to look for hidden meanings or coordinated themes but I assure you, there are none. It’s just assorted randomness pinned behind glass. For more background on how the privy was constructed, wry comments from my father and a poem about the privy experience in winter check out Backwoods Blog #42 or click here https://backwoodsblog.com/2021/03/09/isolation-blues-42/

  1. Dave, you are getting kind of personal.

I just moved an outhouse we hadn’t been using for the original purpose to a place where I will start producing humanure.
