BURGER BOY

Burger Boy in Caribou, Maine

I am currently serving a two-month jury duty term, my first experience as a participant in our democratic judicial process. Our high school government class took a field trip to the Houlton courthouse in 1978 and I sat on the sample jury, but I don’t think that counts. This week (and possibly next) I am serving on a case at the Caribou courthouse, so instead of the usual blog content I thought I’d share where I’m eating lunch. On most days I’ll probably lug my Stanley wide-mouth food thermos, but just up the street from the courthouse is one of Caribou’s iconic eateries, Burger Boy (not to be confused with Bob’s Big Boy). Burger Boy opened in 1968 and for over fifty years has served some of the best homemade fries, classic burgers and ice cream treats in Northern Maine. I’ve driven by Burger Boy for years but (for whatever reason) I had never eaten there until this week. It was great! And depending how long this case lasts or how tired I get of my thermos lunches, I suspect I’ll be back at Burger Boy again…

On the road,

Dave

  1. Wow! The updated Burger Boy looks great. When I worked for DHS, I went to Caribou almost every week and to Fort Kent at least twice per month. I remember driving past Burger Boy. I don’t recall actually eating there. However, several years ago now, I, too, had my first and only jury duty in Caribou. I remember that I went across the street to Reno’s (now out of business, but still showing up on Googlemaps 2014 trip through the city). In fact, the judge for the case was Bill Stokes, whom I had met through his friend Geoff Goodwin, with whom I played golf 30 years ago or so. I think they both clerked for that good Houlton UU Supreme Court Justice, Jim Archibald. Anyway, the Honorable Bill came into Reno’s about the time I was sitting down and I invited him to join me. He did, but we did not discuss the case. Finally, a lunch place that I liked better than Reno’s during my DHS job and Jury Duty was Cindy’s Sub Shop, maybe 1/4 mile beyond Burger Boy. They had a great Gyro. Enjoy your Civic Duty.

    1. Based on your “Cindy’s Sub Shop” recommendation I had lunch there this week (I’m still on jury duty) and ordered the steak and cheese sub with extra peppers, onions and mushrooms. Yum!

      Thanks Mike!
