Hunting Season at Harvey Siding  (1951)

My father built the Hutchinson woods camp at Harvey Siding sometime in the late 1940s along the bank of the north branch Meduxnekeag River. It was the first camp on the left hand side of the woods road after you crossed the bridge. It wasn’t a large structure, but it was solid-built and sat on a cement foundation, which he was quite proud of. What I’ve noticed from looking at old photos of the camp, is that the asphalt siding he used on the camp is the same pattern as the siding on the barn and milk house back at the farm. He must have had some left over siding laying around and made good use of it (good yankee frugality). My father sold the camp before I was born, so I never actually had a chance to spend any time there, but every time we drove by heading into the woods he would point it out and make some remark about days long past or a good woods story. I’m not sure who the people are in the photos. I seem to remember Dad saying they were visitors from Boston (friends, or perhaps family) who spent a few days at the camp during hunting season. I don’t know any of the details, or if they got a deer, but it does appear that they had a good time in the north Maine woods during their stay. Sometimes hunting season isn’t just about the deer.

  1. The last time I saw that George Hutchinson-designed woodstove in one of your pictures, it was closer to the river. In this picture, there is a bit of smoke in the air suggesting that the stove is going. Seeing no coffee pot on it, my only conclusion is that George used it to heat the surrounding air when he or his guests were outdoors.

    1. You have a good eye Mike, recognizing my father’s backwoods stove from the previous post .105 And you’re right, if I had a fire going in the stove there would be a coffee pot sitting on top!
